The National Palace, also known as the Jubilee Palace, is located in the centre of the city of Addis Ababa. It was built in 1955 to mark the Silver Jubilee of Emperor Haile Selassie and further construction doubled its size between 1966 and 1967.
A key element of Ethiopian built heritage, this former imperial residence has never been open to the public. The project responds to the wish of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to turn this place into a museum with a garden accessible to Ethiopians. Ultimately, the restoration of the palace aims to strengthen Addis Ababa's cultural offering and contribute to the economic vitality, job creation and tourist attractiveness of the capital.
Following the meetings between the French President and the Ethiopian Prime Minister in 2018 and 2019, France has committed to supporting Ethiopia in reforming its cultural and heritage policy. With total funding of €20 million from the French Development Agency (AFD), Team France is supporting the Ethiopian Palaces Administration (FDREPA) in the restoration of the Addis Ababa National Palace, with a view to opening it to the public....
